Procedures, step by step, in sequence
Every page here follows one job through from the first step to the last check, and names the step that everything downstream depends on. Products appear only where a procedure genuinely needs one — and several of these end by recommending no purchase at all, because collimating a tube or letting it cool does more than a new eyepiece would. Where the answer turns on your own sky, your own instrument or a limit the maker sets, the page hands over to the documentation.
Getting started
The first three nights with a new telescope — what to look at, in what order, and why the Moon comes before anything faint.
- The first three nights: what to look at, in order Most telescopes that end up in a cupboard were pointed at the wrong thing on the first night. This sequence starts with the object that cannot be missed and works outward from it.
- Learn the sky first: it makes the telescope easier A telescope shows a patch of sky smaller than the Moon. Knowing roughly where things are turns finding them from a search into a short walk.
- Out of town: what changes, and what to bring A dark sky is the largest single improvement available to an observer, and it costs a drive rather than a purchase. It also punishes anything forgotten.
- A list before dark: why improvising wastes the night An evening spent deciding what to look at is an evening mostly spent not looking at anything. Fifteen minutes of planning in daylight roughly doubles what gets seen.
- From chart to eyepiece: the skill everything rests on A telescope points at what you can already find. Everything else about the hobby is downstream of being able to read a chart and walk from a bright star to a faint one.
Choosing a first telescope
Working backwards from where you will use it and what you want to see, instead of forwards from a number on a box.
- Choose backwards: from where it will be used The specification that decides a first telescope is not printed on the box. It is the distance between where the telescope is stored and where it will be used, and how often that journey is worth making.
- Two sizes, one budget: how to decide The larger of two telescopes shows more on any given night and gets used on fewer nights. Which of those wins is a question about your house, not about optics.
- Decide this first: eye or sensor These are two hobbies that share a vocabulary. Buying for one and then switching to the other means buying twice, and it is the most expensive mistake available here.
- The mount decides: choose it before the tube A modest tube on a capable mount is a pleasure. A capable tube on a modest mount is a source of complaints about the tube.
Setting up a mount
Levelling, balancing in both axes, polar alignment, and the GoTo routine that decides whether objects land in the eyepiece.
- Setting up: level, balance, align, in that order An equatorial mount rewards a fixed routine, because every step assumes the previous one was done. Skipping the first makes the third meaningless.
- A base that moves right: tension, not friction A Dobsonian that is pleasant to use and one that is a fight differ by a few turns of adjustment, and most owners never discover where those adjustments are.
- Rebalancing once a camera changes the weight distribution A mount balanced with a bare tube is not balanced once a camera, a filter wheel and a guide scope are hanging off it. The correction takes five minutes and prevents an evening of bad guiding.
- Working around walls, lamps and a narrow strip of sky Most observing happens in ordinary gardens with houses on three sides. A constrained site is not a reason not to observe; it is a reason to plan differently.
Building an eyepiece case
Choosing three or four focal lengths that do not repeat each other in your own telescope, and what to add after them.
- A case built on magnifications, not focal lengths Most eyepiece cases contain more glass than magnifications. The way to avoid that is to do the division before the purchase rather than after it.
- The second and third purchase: fill gaps, not sets The second eyepiece purchase is where most cases start accumulating duplicates, because the obvious next step is to complete a range rather than to fill a gap.
- Past the gaps: what actually improves a view A case with no gaps left is where most people keep buying eyepieces anyway. The improvements available at that point are elsewhere.
- Filters: storing, threading and not scratching Filters are the smallest things in an astronomy case and the easiest to damage, lose or thread onto the wrong barrel in the dark.
First astrophotography
From a camera on a tripod to a tracked wide field: exposure, spacing, focus and the first stack, without a mount purchase.
- From tripod to tracker: the first real exposure The cheapest genuine entry into astrophotography is a camera you already own, a lens you already own, and one driven axis. Everything that goes wrong at this stage goes wrong for the same three reasons.
- Adding guiding: what it fixes and what it cannot Guiding is the step that takes exposures from seconds to minutes, and it is also the step where a new and confusing failure mode appears.
- After the capture: calibration, stacking, stretching Most of the work in astrophotography happens indoors afterwards, and the order of the steps is not optional — each one assumes the previous one was done.
- The easiest target: and the one that teaches the most The Moon is bright enough that none of the usual difficulties apply: no tracking, no stacking of hours, no dark site. It is also the subject that teaches focus and seeing faster than anything else.
Buying
How to spread a budget between tube, mount and glass, and which upgrade can wait until the first instrument is understood.
- Where the money goes: tube, mount, glass Nearly every regretted purchase in this hobby is a budget spent entirely on the tube. What the tube sits on and what you look through decide as much as the optics do.
- Second-hand: what ages well and what does not Optics age well and electronics do not, which is why a used tube is usually a safer purchase than a used GoTo handset at the same discount.
- Used: glass yes, electronics carefully Optics age well and electronics do not, and the price difference between used and new rarely reflects that.
- The total, not the tube: what a first setup really costs Nearly every first telescope needs a short list of small things before it works properly. Counting them from the start turns an unpleasant surprise into a plan.
- The point where more equipment stops helping Every setup reaches a point where the next purchase changes nothing. Recognising it early saves a great deal of money and a certain amount of disappointment.
Care & maintenance

- Once a year: what has quietly worked loose Equipment degrades slowly enough that nobody notices, which is why an annual check finds things that have been costing performance for months.
- Dew, from the first hour to the drive home Dew is the reason more sessions end early than cloud is, and almost all of it is preventable by doing three cheap things before it starts rather than after.
- The long gap: putting an instrument away properly Short summer nights mean most European observers put their equipment away for months. What happens to it in that time is decided in the twenty minutes before it goes into the cupboard.
