A phone held to an eyepiece will photograph the Moon, and everyone discovers that within a week of buying a telescope. What they also discover is that holding it steady while pressing a button is nearly impossible, and that the phone camera has to be centered on the eyepiece within a fraction of a millimeter or the frame goes black at the edges. A phone adapter exists to hold that alignment, and the ones that do it well share a property the photographs rarely show: adjustment in three axes, so that the camera can be moved across, along and away from the eyepiece independently. An adapter with a single clamp and no fine adjustment turns the problem into a wrestling match in the dark. Two dimensions decide compatibility. The eyepiece diameter range the collar accepts has to cover the eyepiece actually used — a wide-field two-inch eyepiece has a barrel far larger than a small one — and the phone width range has to cover the phone with its case on, or the case comes off every session. The other quiet specification is the camera offset: phones with camera modules near the corner need more travel than those with a centered lens, and some adapters cannot reach. Read the rigidity, because a plastic arm that flexes loses the alignment it took five minutes to find.
