A red dot finder projects an illuminated mark onto a clear window so that the observer, looking through it with both eyes open, sees the mark superimposed on the real sky. There is no magnification and no image — the sky is exactly as the eye sees it, with a dot on it — and that is precisely why it is easier for a beginner than any optical finder. There is nothing to invert, nothing to mirror, and nothing to match against a chart. The dot appears to sit on the star, and the telescope points there. The first thing to read is the reticle: a single dot is the simplest, while concentric circles give an estimate of angular distance that is genuinely useful when star-hopping to something invisible.
