Kosmos sells this as an experiment set rather than as a telescope: the booklet explains how a refractor is built and how to use one, and the instrument itself is a fixed 30x metal spyglass. For a child of eight that combination teaches more than a wobbly tripod would.
The steadiness problem
Thirty times magnification multiplies every tremor by thirty. Hand-held, that is the limit of usability — bracing against a wall or a fence makes a visible difference, and it is the first technique worth teaching with it.
