Two numbers on an eyepiece, measured loosely

An eyepiece publishes an apparent field in degrees and an eye relief in millimetres. Both are genuinely useful, and neither is defined by a document anyone can point to.

Two angles, two distances, one habit

Two manufacturer specifications that between them decide how an eyepiece feels to use.

Apparent field of view, given in degrees, is how wide the view appears to the observer — the size of the illuminated circle as the eye perceives it. Divided by the magnification the eyepiece produces in a given telescope, it yields the true field: how much sky actually fits.

Eye relief, given in millimetres, is how far behind the glass the eye can sit and still see the whole field. It decides whether spectacles can be worn, and it decides comfort generally, since a very short figure forces the eye against the lens.

Both figures are published by convention, on a scale everyone understands.

What it does not promise

Neither is defined by a document. Makers measure apparent field by more than one method, and differences of a few degrees between catalogues are common enough that comparing two figures across brands is a rough exercise.

Eye relief is reported even more loosely. The published figure is usually measured from the glass, while what an observer gets is measured from the top of the eyecup, and a tall fixed eyecup can consume a useful part of it.

And apparent field says nothing about edge performance. Two eyepieces publishing the same angle can hold stars sharply to the rim or smear them across the outer third, and no specification distinguishes them.

What it works with

The two figures work with the focal length of the eyepiece and of the telescope: focal lengths give the magnification, magnification and apparent field give the true field, and eye relief decides whether any of it is comfortable enough to use for an hour.

On this site they appear on every eyepiece family and on Barlow lenses, which preserve eye relief where a shorter eyepiece would sacrifice it, and on binoculars, monoculars, spotting scopes and finders, where the same two conventions are used.

The questions that keep arriving

How do I get the true field from the apparent field?

The usual approximation divides the apparent field by the magnification the eyepiece gives in your telescope. It is an approximation, and the more exact method uses the field stop diameter, which fewer makers publish.

How much eye relief do I need with spectacles?

More than most short eyepieces of simple design offer, which is why long eye relief designs exist and cost more. The figure that matters is what remains usable after the eyecup, not the raw number.

Why do two eyepieces with the same apparent field look different?

Because the figure says nothing about how the edge of that field behaves. A wide field with stars smeared at its rim and one that holds them to the edge publish the same number, and the difference is what separates the price tiers.
