The thread at the bottom of every barrel

A filter does not clip on. It screws into the end of an eyepiece, a diagonal or a camera nose, and there are two threads in common use because there are two barrel sizes.

Which thread belongs to which barrel

Two threads, one for each barrel size, and both are nominal designations rather than approximations. The 1.25 inch barrel carries M28.5 × 0.6 — 28.5 mm nominal diameter, 0.6 mm pitch — and the 2 inch barrel carries M48 × 0.75. Note that the second is 48 mm on a barrel that is 50.8 mm: the thread is cut inside the tube, so it is narrower than the barrel it sits in, and North American listings calling it simply a “2-inch thread” are naming the barrel rather than the thread. A filter is manufactured as a coated disc in a cell cut to one of those two, and it screws into the bottom of an eyepiece barrel, the nose of a camera, the entrance of a diagonal or the cell of a filter wheel.

The pairing with the barrel is what makes the system usable: a 1.25 inch eyepiece takes the smaller filter, a 2 inch eyepiece the larger. Nothing has to be looked up as long as the barrel is known.

What it does not promise

A matching thread does not promise a filter will fit physically. Cells vary in depth, and a deep one can reach the field lens inside a short eyepiece or foul the shoulder of a diagonal.

It says nothing about the optical quality of the glass in the cell. Flatness, parallelism and coating decide how a filter behaves at high magnification, and none of those appears in a thread designation.

And it makes no promise about the filter’s effect. A thread is a thread: a filter that screws in perfectly can be entirely the wrong band for what is being looked at, which is the commonest disappointment on this part of the shelf.

What it works with

The filter thread ties the filters to everything with a barrel: eyepieces, diagonals, camera noses and filter wheels. It is also what allows a single filter to serve both an eye and a sensor, since both arrive through the same fitting.

The questions that keep arriving

Can a 1.25" filter be used on a 2" eyepiece?

Not directly — the thread is smaller than the barrel it would have to sit in. Step rings exist, and they place the smaller filter inside the wider light cone, where it can vignette the edge of the field the wide barrel was bought to deliver.

Why does my filter foul the barrel of a short eyepiece?

Because a filter cell has depth, and some eyepieces have very little clearance inside the end of the barrel before the field lens. A deep cell can touch the glass. Where a maker publishes the cell depth, this site reports it.

Do camera noses take the same filters as eyepieces?

Usually yes, because a camera nose is turned to the same barrel diameter and carries the same thread at its end. That is exactly why the filters bought for visual work are often usable for imaging without buying a second set.
