EcooPro 70/360 refractor review

EcooPro's 70/360 refractor: fully multi-coated optics, K25 and K10 Kellner eyepieces, an erect-image diagonal, a 5x24 finder, an aluminum tripod and a backpack, sold with three different magnification claims.

Figures, then a contradiction

EcooPro publishes both defining figures, 70 mm and 360 mm (f/5.1), and names the eyepieces: Kellner K25 and K10. Divide and they give 14.4x and 36x. The listing says 51x to 128x; the title says 15x to 150x. Neither follows from its own numbers.

Wide and bright

At f/5.1, the view is wide: the whole Moon with room around it, the Pleiades entire. The cost is a violet fringe on bright edges, normal for a short achromat.

The kit

An erect-image diagonal, a 5x24 finder with bracket, a pan handle, an adjustable aluminum tripod, Moon and star maps, and a backpack for all of it. Setup is tool-free.

Adding power

For planets, a 2x Barlow or a 6 mm eyepiece.

What it publishes, and what it withholds

Strengths

  • Aperture and focal length both published
  • Erect-image diagonal and backpack
  • Wide field at f/5.1, about $60

Compromises

  • Stated 51x to 128x (and 15x to 150x in the title) does not match 360 mm
  • f/5.1 shows violet fringing on bright objects
  • Low top power for planets as supplied

What observers ask about this one

What are the real magnifications?

360 mm divided by 25 is 14.4x, and by 10 is 36x. The listing's 51x to 128x and the title's 15x to 150x do not follow from the published figures.

What does f/5.1 mean?

A wide, bright field for star clusters and the whole Moon, with some violet color around bright objects, typical of a fast achromat.

How do I get more power?

A 2x Barlow (72x with the 10 mm) or a 6 mm eyepiece (60x).

What buyers actually choose

Amazon reports what buyers took in the month before this page was last checked: at least 100.
