What a finder shoe guarantees: almost nothing
Almost nothing, which is why the page exists. A finder shoe is a small bracket screwed to the tube of a telescope, into which the foot of a finder slides and is locked. Most are a dovetail slot of some description; beyond that, manufacturers please themselves.
Several shapes are widespread enough to have informal names, and a few makers have used a single shoe consistently for long enough that their own accessories interchange. None of that amounts to a standard, and none of it crosses between brands reliably.
What can be said usefully is the shape of the problem: a shoe fixes a slot width, a slot depth and a locking method, and all three have to match.
What it does not promise
A shoe that accepts a finder does not promise it will hold alignment. The locking screw, the fit in the slot and the stiffness of the bracket decide that, and a finder that shifts between the start and the end of a session is worse than none, because the observer trusts it.
It does not promise clearance either. A finder can seat correctly in its shoe and then foul a diagonal, a camera or the observer’s own head when the telescope is pointed high.
And it says nothing about the height of the optical axis, which decides whether the finder can be aligned at all within the travel of its adjustment screws.
What it works with
The shoe is the junction between a telescope and whatever helps aim it — an optical finder, a red dot finder, occasionally a guide scope on a small tube. It is also the part most often left behind when a finder is replaced, since the new finder usually arrives with a bracket of its own.

How do I find out which shoe my telescope has?
By measuring the one already fitted, and by looking at which replacement finders the telescope’s own maker sells. A photograph will not settle it: several shoes look alike and differ by a few millimetres in the slot.
Are there adapters between shoes?
Some, and they exist because the problem is so common. They add height and a joint, both of which matter on a finder that has to hold its alignment through a night of cooling.
Can I fit a shoe to a telescope that has none?
Usually yes — shoes are sold separately and attach through a screw or an adhesive base. Where a tube has no threaded points, that decision is worth more thought than a finder normally deserves.
