Seven filters, each with a job

Neewer’s set holds five color filters (red, orange, yellow, green and blue), a lunar and skyglow filter and a circular polarizer, all in standard 1.25-inch cells that screw into most eyepieces.

What each color is for

The listing gives a sentence per filter: red helps Mercury and Venus stand out against a daytime sky; orange raises contrast and penetrates haze; yellow brings out Mars’s polar caps; green enhances frost patches and surface fog. Blue is the usual filter for Jupiter’s belts.

The lunar and skyglow filter

Described as a multi-band filter that cuts glare on the Moon and some sodium streetlight wavelengths.

No Wratten numbers

The colors are named but not numbered, so they cannot be compared exactly with other makers’ filters. See Wratten numbers.

On small telescopes

Dark filters such as blue and green absorb a lot of light. On 70 to 80 mm telescopes, the light yellow and orange filters are usually more useful.

What gets asked before buying

Which filter for which planet?

Neewer says: yellow for Mars's polar caps, red for Mercury and Venus in daylight, orange for contrast, green for frost and fog. Blue is the usual choice for Jupiter's belts and Saturn's cloud bands.

What is the CPL for?

A circular polarizer cuts scattered and reflected light. Neewer pitches it for contrast on the Moon and planets in photographs.

Why do Wratten numbers matter?

They define a color precisely. Without them, one maker's red cannot be compared with another's. See [Wratten numbers](/standards/wratten-numbers/).
