Nine classes of sky, judged by eye

A nine-point scale describing how dark a site is, from an inner-city sky to one where the Milky Way casts a shadow. It is the single figure that predicts what an evening will show.

What the scale describes

Nine classes, each a paragraph of description rather than a measurement. At one end, a site where the Milky Way is structured and detailed and the faintest stars are at the limit of the unaided eye. At the other, an inner-city sky where only the brightest stars and planets are visible at all.

The intermediate classes are described by what can be seen: whether the Milky Way is visible at all, whether it shows structure, whether light domes from towns are obvious, whether the zodiacal light appears.

What the scale fixes is a shared vocabulary. Two observers comparing notes about what an instrument showed are comparing very little unless they also say what sky it was under.

What it does not promise

It is not a measurement. It is a judgement made against descriptions, and two people at the same site can differ by a class. Instruments that measure sky brightness directly exist and report a different quantity in different units.

It says nothing about seeing. A site can be extremely dark and extremely turbulent, and the class describes only the first.

And it is not stable. A site’s class changes with the season, with humidity, with snow cover, and over years as lighting around it changes.

What it works with

Everything on this site whose usefulness depends on the sky rather than on the equipment: nebula and light pollution filters, large apertures bought for faint objects, binoculars for sweeping the Milky Way, and the red torch that protects the adaptation the class makes worth having.

On this site it appears wherever a recommendation would otherwise be blind to where the reader actually observes.

The questions that keep arriving

Is a Bortle class measured or estimated?

Estimated, by eye, against a description. Instruments that measure sky brightness exist and give a number in magnitudes per square arcsecond; the two are related but are not the same thing, and a class is a judgement.

How much does one class change?

More than most equipment upgrades. Moving a site by two or three classes changes which objects are visible at all, which is not something a larger aperture achieves under the original sky.

Why does it appear on a shopping site?

Because it decides whether a purchase will do anything. A nebula filter earns its place under some classes and not others, and a page that recommends one without naming the sky is recommending blind.
