What the two diameters settle
Two diameters, expressed in inches and manufactured in millimetres: 1.25 inches, which is 31.75 mm, and 2 inches, which is 50.8 mm. An eyepiece, a Barlow, a diagonal or an extension tube is turned to one of those two figures, and a focuser or a diagonal is bored to accept one of them.
That is the whole of it. The convention fixes a diameter and nothing else — not the length of the barrel, not the position of the shoulder, not the thread inside the end, and not the optical design above it.
A third diameter, 0.965 inches (24.5 mm), predates both and survives on inexpensive telescopes sold through general retailers. It is not part of the modern range in any practical sense: the choice of eyepieces made for it is small and getting smaller.
What it does not promise
A barrel diameter says nothing about quality. A poor eyepiece and an excellent one are turned to the same figure, and the larger barrel is not the better one — it exists to pass a wider field stop, which only matters at long focal lengths.
It does not promise that an accessory will reach focus, either. A diagonal or an extension consumes optical path, and a telescope with limited focuser travel can accept a barrel perfectly and still be unable to bring an image to a point behind it.
It also says nothing about weight. A 2 inch wide-field eyepiece can be heavy enough to unbalance a small mount and to defeat the clamp holding it, and neither problem is visible in the specification.
What it works with
The barrel diameter decides what enters a focuser, what enters a diagonal, and which adapter is needed between the two. It also decides the filter thread cut into the bottom of the barrel, because the two are paired: the smaller barrel carries the smaller thread and the larger barrel the larger one.
On this site it appears wherever something is inserted rather than screwed: eyepieces, zoom eyepieces and sets, Barlow lenses, diagonals, extension tubes and every filter that screws into one of them.
The questions that keep arriving
Can a 1.25" eyepiece be used in a 2" focuser?
Yes, through an adapter, and most 2" diagonals and focusers are supplied with one. The reverse is not possible: a 2" barrel will not enter a 1.25" fitting, and no adapter can make it.
Does a 2" eyepiece show more than a 1.25" one?
Only at long focal lengths, and only because of the field stop. The wider barrel allows a larger field stop, which allows a wider true field. At short focal lengths the field stop is small enough to fit either barrel, and the larger fitting adds nothing but weight.
What is the 0.965" fitting?
An older and much narrower barrel, still supplied with some inexpensive telescopes sold to beginners. Almost nothing is made for it today, so a telescope with a 0.965" focuser cannot be improved by buying better eyepieces — which is why the fitting appears in the buying advice on this site as a reason to look elsewhere.
