Bushnell Falcon 10x50 (13-3450C) review

A long-running 10x50 porro binocular from Bushnell’s Falcon line, with coated lenses and no gas filling or weather sealing claimed.

The bottom line An honest, unsealed, lightly coated 10x50 whose porro prisms do more for the view than its price suggests.

The geometry is right

Ten times on fifty millimetres gives a five-millimetre exit pupil — the astronomy figure. Whatever else is or is not specified, that part of the design is correct for looking at the night sky.

The coating word matters here

Bushnell writes “coated lenses”. That is the first rung of a four-step ladder: coated, fully coated, multi-coated, fully multi-coated. A porro binocular has a lot of air-to-glass surfaces, and each untreated one reflects light away and scatters some of it back as haze.

What is not claimed

Nothing about waterproofing, nitrogen filling or fog resistance appears anywhere. For a pair that lives in a car boot and comes out in the cold, internal fogging is the failure that will eventually show up.

Why it still works

Porro prisms, a correct exit pupil and fifty millimetres of aperture. On the Milky Way, on a comet or on the Pleiades, that combination shows what it is supposed to show — and it does it at a price where the alternatives are compromised elsewhere.

Availability

German, French and Italian Amazon stores ran from 52 € to 65 € on the day of the survey.

American and British Amazon stores list it in local currency, which the euro range above sets aside.

Spanish Amazon store stood above 1.6× the cheapest country. A gap that size normally means stock forwarded from abroad rather than a seller on the ground, so that figure is left out of the range above.

How much does “coated” differ from “fully multi-coated”?

Substantially. “Coated” means at least one surface has one layer; “fully multi-coated” means every air-to-glass surface has several. In a porro design with many surfaces, the difference in transmission and in scattered light is real.

Are porro prisms an advantage?

At this price, usually. A roof prism needs phase coatings and a precise mirror surface to match a porro, and both cost money. A cheap porro is a fairer instrument than a cheap roof.
