Astromania Plössl set 4/10/25 with 2x Barlow review

Three 1.25-inch Plössls of 4, 10 and 25 mm with a 2x Barlow: four-element, 50-degree, fully multi-coated, internally blackened metal eyepieces with filter threads, and a Barlow that takes a camera T-ring.

Four published facts

Astromania gives what most budget sets leave out: four-element Plössl design, a 50-degree apparent field, full multi-coating and internally blackened barrels. All three eyepieces are metal, threaded for 1.25-inch filters, with fold-down rubber eyeguards.

The spread

4, 10 and 25 mm, plus a 2x Barlow. On a 650 mm reflector that is 26x, 65x and 162x, and 52x, 130x and 325x with the Barlow. The 25 mm and the 10 mm are also the two eyepieces most first telescopes come with, so for many owners this set duplicates twice and adds the 4 mm and the Barlow.

The 4 mm

A 4 mm Plössl has eye relief of roughly 3 mm, whatever the listing’s general claim of long eye relief. The 10 mm in the Barlow gives the power of a 5 mm with far more comfort.

The Barlow

The 2x Barlow has T-threads, so with a T-ring it carries a DSLR at the eyepiece end. Astromania pitches the kit for short, fast telescopes, where the 4 mm and the Barlow are most useful.

  • Barlow with T-threads doubles every eyepiece and carries a camera
  • Metal bodies and fold-down rubber eyeguards

Compromises

  • 10 and 25 mm duplicate most supplied eyepieces
  • A 4 mm Plössl has very short eye relief whatever the listing says
  • No case mentioned

What observers ask about this one

What magnifications will I get?

Divide your telescope's focal length by each eyepiece. On a 700 mm refractor: 28x, 70x and 175x, and with the Barlow 56x, 140x and 350x. The last is beyond what a small aperture can use.

Is the 4 mm usable?

On long-focus telescopes it gives high power, but a 4 mm Plössl has eye relief of about 3 mm, so the eye must almost touch the lens. Many observers prefer the 10 mm in the Barlow, which gives the power of a 5 mm with the 10 mm's comfort.

Can I attach a camera?

Yes, to the Barlow, which has T-threads for an optional T-ring.
