Celestron 94307 AstroMaster Accessory Kit review

Celestron's AstroMaster Accessory Kit: a 15 mm Kellner and a 6 mm Plössl, a 2x Power Lens with T-threads, #80A blue, #25 red and Moon filters, a microfiber cloth and a foam-lined case.

Eight pieces

Celestron’s kit holds a 15 mm Kellner, a 6 mm Plössl, a 2x Power Lens (a Barlow) with T-threads, three filters, a microfiber cloth and a foam-lined hard case. It is built for Celestron’s AstroMaster telescopes and fits any 1.25-inch telescope.

Filters with numbers

The color filters are named by Wratten number: #80A blue and #25 red, with a Moon filter. The number defines the color, so these can be compared with any maker’s filters. Blue helps Jupiter’s belts; red helps Mars. See Wratten numbers.

Two eyepiece designs

The 15 mm is a Kellner, the 6 mm a Plössl. On an AstroMaster 130 (650 mm), that is 43x and 108x, and 87x and 217x with the Barlow.

The Barlow and a camera

The 2x Power Lens has T-threads, so a DSLR with a T-ring attaches to it.

What it publishes, and what it withholds

Strengths

  • Wratten numbers published for the color filters
  • T-threaded Barlow for a camera
  • Foam-lined case and 2-year US warranty

Compromises

  • Only two eyepieces
  • The 15 mm is a Kellner, a simpler design than a Plössl
  • No apparent field or coating details

What observers ask about this one

What do #80A and #25 filters do?

A #80A blue filter brings out Jupiter's belts and the Great Red Spot; a #25 red sharpens Mars's surface markings and polar caps. Wratten numbers let you compare them with any other maker's filters; see [Wratten numbers](/standards/wratten-numbers/).

Does it fit non-Celestron telescopes?

Yes, any telescope that takes 1.25-inch eyepieces and filters, Celestron says.

Kellner or Plössl?

A Kellner has three elements and a slightly narrower, less corrected field than a four-element Plössl. At 15 mm on a slow telescope the difference is small.
