CelticBird CB045A 13-piece kit review

CelticBird's 13-piece kit: five Plössls from 40 to 6 mm, a 2x Barlow with T2 threads, five color filters, a polarizing filter and a Moon filter, in a foam-lined metal case.

Thirteen pieces

Five Plössls (40, 20, 12.5, 8 and 6 mm), a 2x Barlow, five color filters (red, blue, orange, green and yellow), a polarizing filter and a Moon filter, in a sturdy foam-lined metal case with room for more.

The spread

On a 700 mm refractor: about 18x, 35x, 56x, 88x and 117x, then 35x to 233x through the Barlow. The 20 mm repeats a common supplied eyepiece.

The 40 mm

In a 1.25-inch barrel, a 40 mm Plössl has to narrow its apparent field to fit through the barrel, so it shows about the same patch of sky as a 32 mm at lower power. It is a finder eyepiece more than a wide-field one.

The Barlow

T2 threads (M42 × 0.75). With a T-ring, it works as a prime-focus adapter or a tele-extender for a DSLR.

The polarizer

The kit’s distinctive filter. Alone it dims the Moon by a fixed amount; paired with a second polarizer it becomes adjustable.

What observers ask about this one

What is a polarizing filter for?

A single polarizer dims the Moon by a fixed amount; two polarizers stacked and rotated give variable dimming. CelticBird includes one, which works as a neutral Moon filter.

Why is a 40 mm Plössl narrower than a 32 mm?

A 1.25-inch barrel limits the field stop to about 27 mm. A 32 mm Plössl already reaches it; a 40 mm has to narrow its apparent field to fit, so the true field is about the same with a smaller, more magnified-looking view.

What powers does it give?

On a 700 mm refractor: about 18x, 35x, 56x, 88x and 117x, and twice each with the Barlow.
