Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ6 (S30330) review

Sky-Watcher's AZ-EQ6: a 44 lb-payload GoTo mount that works as a German equatorial, an alt-azimuth or a carrier for two telescopes, with belt drive, permanent periodic error correction and Freedom Find encoders.

Three mounts in one

The AZ-EQ6 works as a German equatorial for long-exposure imaging, as an alt-azimuth for visual use, and, with the secondary saddle included, as a carrier for two telescopes side by side.

Forty-four pounds

Sky-Watcher rates it for 44 lb (20 kg). That covers 8- to 11-inch Schmidt-Cassegrains, large refractors and heavy imaging rigs. Amazon’s item data gives about 20 kg (44 lb) for the mount itself, so plan on carrying it in pieces.

Belt drive and PPEC

The drive is a belt system, which Sky-Watcher says gives a smooth periodic-error curve, low backlash and silent slewing. Permanent periodic error correction stores a correction that survives power-off. Both matter for unguided and guided imaging.

Freedom Find

Dual encoders let the mount be pushed by hand without losing alignment, which makes visual sessions more relaxed.

What it publishes, and what it withholds

Strengths

  • 44 lb payload for large tubes
  • Belt drive and permanent PEC for smooth tracking
  • Switches between equatorial, alt-azimuth and two-telescope modes; second saddle included

Compromises

  • About 44 lb itself in Amazon's item data: not a travel mount
  • Pointing accuracy and power draw not published
  • The most expensive mount on this shelf

What observers ask about this one

Why have both EQ and alt-az modes?

Equatorial mode is for long-exposure imaging, where the field must not rotate. Alt-azimuth mode is simpler for visual use and lets two telescopes ride side by side on the included secondary saddle.

What does PPEC do?

Permanent periodic error correction stores a correction for the small repeating errors of the worm gear, even after power-off. Combined with the belt drive, it gives smoother tracking for imaging.

What are Freedom Find encoders?

Encoders on both axes that let the mount be released and pushed by hand without losing its alignment, so GoTo still works afterward.
