Choose backwards: from where it will be used

The specification that decides a first telescope is not printed on the box. It is the distance between where the telescope is stored and where it will be used, and how often that journey is worth making.

Start with the constraints, because they eliminate more options than any preference does.

Where will it be stored?

Somewhere unheated means no cool-down wait and a telescope that is ready when you are. A heated room means a long wait every session, which quietly reduces how often it gets used. Measure the space, including the doorway.

How far is it to where you will use it?

A balcony, a garden fifteen paces away, or a car journey to a dark site are three different requirements. The last one caps the weight and the packed length far more tightly than the first.

What do you want to see?

Planets and the Moon want focal length and tolerate a small aperture; they also tolerate a bright sky. Faint galaxies and nebulae want aperture and a dark sky, and one without the other disappoints.

Now pick the design

A Dobsonian for maximum aperture at home. A small refractor for a balcony or for travel. A folded tube for a long focal length in a short package. A mounted reflector if photography is a real intention rather than a maybe.

Then check the two things that decide satisfaction

How long the image takes to stop shaking after the tube is nudged, and whether the eyepiece fitting is the standard barrel. Those two predict happiness better than aperture does.

The questions that keep arriving

Is there a size that is always right?

No, and the question is the wrong shape. The largest instrument that will genuinely be carried outside on an ordinary evening shows more over a year than a larger one used four times.

What if I might get into photography later?

Then the mount matters more than the tube, and the budget split changes completely. It is worth deciding now, because a visual telescope bought first is rarely the one that gets used for imaging.
