Dark adaptation takes about twenty minutes to build and roughly one second of white light to destroy, and that asymmetry is the entire reason this shelf exists. The eye is far less sensitive to deep red than to other colours, so a red light bright enough to read a chart by disturbs adaptation very little. What matters first is whether the red is real. A true red LED emits in a narrow band; a white LED behind a red filter leaks other wavelengths through, and enough of them get through on some cheap torches to spoil the point. The second thing, and the one most often missing, is a low enough minimum. Most torches sold as astronomy lights are far too bright at their lowest setting for a genuinely dark site, and a smooth dimmer that goes down to a faint glow is worth more than any amount of maximum output. Next is mode memory: a torch that starts on white, or that cycles through white before reaching red, will catch its owner out at least once a session and everybody nearby with it. Read the battery — a coin cell is light and dies without warning, an AA or a rechargeable cell is heavier and honest about its state — and read the behaviour in cold, which shortens every battery.
