Judged on its minimum

This site’s advice pages say it plainly: a red torch is chosen on how dim it goes, not on how bright. A continuously adjustable dial, as here, is the mechanism that allows a genuinely low setting — where a two-step switch usually offers “too bright” and “off”.

The published figures

Three modes

Continuous bright, continuous dim, and flashing. The first two cover reading a chart and finding a dropped eyepiece; the third, with the 360-degree side cutouts, is for being seen rather than for seeing.

The blanks in the listing

The wavelength of the LED. Two of the night lights on this shelf publish theirs — 625 and 630 nanometres — and this, the one made for astronomy, does not.
