A 203/1200 Newtonian on a Dobsonian base — the largest aperture in this group, sold with an accessory set and a mount with nothing to align.

The bottom line The most light-gathering instrument in this group and the simplest mount, at the cost of bulk that decides how often it goes outside.

What two hundred millimetres buys

Light. Compared with the 130 mm instruments on the same shelf, a 203 mm mirror collects roughly two and a half times as much, and faint extended objects are exactly what that helps. At f/5.9 the field stays usable and the ratio is forgiving enough that ordinary eyepieces hold up.

The mount that does not need aligning

A rocker box: up, down, left, right, on Teflon-style bearings. There is no polar alignment, no counterweight, no electronics and nothing to level beyond standing it on firm ground. That simplicity is why the design has survived unchanged for decades.

The real limit is the size of the boot

A 1200 mm tube plus a base is two trips to the garden and a decision about where it lives. That is not a criticism of the telescope; it is the single factor that most reliably predicts how many nights it is used.

Against a 130 mm it collects about two and a half times the light, which is arithmetic on the two areas. In practice it is the step at which many galaxies stop being smudges and start having shape.

Does a Dobsonian track?

Not by itself. It is a manual alt-azimuth mount, and the target drifts. At low power that is a nudge every minute or two; at high power it is constant attention, which is the trade for the simplicity.
