A planisphere is two discs that turn against each other: line the date up with the hour and the window shows the sky above at that moment. It is centuries old in principle, it needs no battery, it cannot lose signal, and it survives being dropped in wet grass — which is why it is still recommended alongside every application. Its real advantage is pedagogic rather than practical: turning the disc through a night, or through a year, shows the way the sky moves in a way that a screen that simply redraws itself does not. The specification that decides whether it works at all is the latitude band. A planisphere is calculated for a range of latitudes, and one bought for the wrong band puts the horizon in the wrong place and shows constellations that never rise. Check it before anything else. Size is the next trade: a large disc is far easier to read by dim red light and far more awkward to carry, and a small one is the opposite. The magnitude limit decides how crowded the chart is — a disc showing only the brighter stars matches what is visible from a town, a denser one suits a dark site and confuses a beginner. Every planisphere distorts near the horizon, since a dome is being flattened onto a circle, and how gracefully it does so varies. Read the material: laminated card survives dew, plain card does not.
