The best dew control for telescopes for 2026

Dew does not form because the air is damp. It forms because a piece of glass pointed at a clear sky radiates its heat away into space and falls below the temperature of the air around it, at which point the moisture already in that air condenses on it. Understanding that explains both remedies, and explains why wiping the glass never works for long. A dew shield is a tube extension that narrows the patch of sky the glass can see, which slows the radiative loss and buys time — often a whole evening in mild conditions, and nothing at all on a bad night. It costs no power, weighs little and belongs on every refractor and every folded telescope. A heater band wraps the tube near the glass and holds it a degree or two above the air, which stops the process rather than delaying it. What has to be read there is power: a band draws current all night, the battery that runs it is the part usually forgotten, and running one at full output wastes charge and can put enough warmth into the tube to disturb the image. That is why a controller that varies the output, or one that reads temperature and humidity, is worth more than a larger band.
