Four figures, published

A hundred and forty-eight to a hundred and sixty-seven millimetres of tube outside diameter. Two hundred millimetres of shield height. Five hundred and eighty millimetres of overall length. Those are the numbers that decide whether it fits and how much good it does, and all four are printed.

Why height matters as much as diameter

A dew shield works by limiting how much open sky the objective can radiate towards. A taller shield restricts that view further and delays dew for longer — at the cost of catching more wind and adding length to the tube.

The lining

Black velvet-like fabric. It absorbs the condensation that forms on the inside of the shield, and it absorbs the stray light that would otherwise bounce down onto the objective from a street lamp. The second effect is visible on a dry night as well.

The fitting

A hook-and-loop closure on a non-slip foam strip. It rolls flat when not in use, which is the practical advantage over a rigid shield — a 580 mm rigid tube takes up a corner of the car.
