Made for one instrument

The MCX102. A rigid dew shield is cut to one diameter and slides on; there is nothing to adjust, nothing to strap and nothing to slip. The price of that is that it fits only what it was made for.

Three effects, all named

Preventing the front lens fogging, reducing stray light reflections, and physically protecting the lens. The second is often forgotten and it applies every night, not only damp ones: a shaded objective sees better contrast.

Why a Maksutov needs it

The corrector is a meniscus lens sitting flat at the front of a sealed tube. It faces the open sky, radiates heat away and drops below the dew point faster than a recessed mirror does. Among common designs, it is the first to fog.

The blanks in the listing

Dimensions, material, weight. For a rigid shield sized to one telescope, the first matters least — but it decides whether it still fits in the case.

Availability

German, French, Italian and Spanish Amazon stores ran from 29 € to 38 € on the day of the survey.

British Amazon store lists it in local currency, which the euro range above sets aside.
