A telescope case is bought after the first time something is carried loose in a car, and it is chosen badly more often than almost any other accessory, because buyers compare the outside when the purchase is decided by the inside. Internal dimensions are the specification that matters, and they are always smaller than the external ones by the thickness of the shell and the foam — a tube that fits in theory does not fit a case whose walls are twenty millimetres thick on each side. Measure the tube with its dew shield and its finder attached, because that is how it will be put away. The foam decides how the case works in practice. Pick-and-pluck foam is cut to shape at home in ten minutes and holds a specific set of items; layered sheet foam adapts as the equipment changes; a padded fabric divider system suits eyepieces and small parts better than either. A hard case with pick-and-pluck foam that has been cut for a previous telescope is not reusable. Read the shell and the sealing: a gasket and a pressure-equalising valve matter for a case that will sit in a cold boot and be opened in a warm room, where condensation would otherwise form inside. Read the weight empty, since a heavily built case can add as much as the optics it protects, and read whether wheels and a telescoping handle are fitted for anything large.
