A polar scope is a small telescope that sits inside the polar axis of an equatorial mount and shows the region around the celestial pole with a reticle engraved on it. It exists because of a fact that surprises beginners: Polaris is not at the pole. It sits a little away from it and circles it once a day, so pointing the mount straight at Polaris leaves an error large enough to ruin a long exposure. The reticle carries a marked circle or a clock face, and the routine is to work out where on that circle Polaris should be at this date and time and to put it there — which is what turns a rough alignment into one good enough for unguided minutes. The first thing to check is compatibility, because a polar scope is made to fit a particular family of mounts and will not simply drop into another; the fit inside the axis, the retaining ring and the length are all specific. The reticle pattern differs between makers, and some are far easier to use in the cold than others; patterns that show constellations near the pole help confirm that the right star is in view. Illumination has to be dim and adjustable — a bright reticle washes out Polaris itself, which is the classic frustration — and a battery illuminator is one more coin cell to remember.
