A telescope cover serves an owner who has decided to leave a mounted instrument in place between sessions — on a patio, under a carport, in a garden — and that decision is what the cover has to survive rather than the weather in the abstract. Two properties pull against each other and every design on this shelf is a compromise between them. Waterproofing keeps rain off the optics and the electronics. Breathability lets the moisture that is already underneath escape, and a cover that is perfectly waterproof and entirely sealed traps humid air against cold metal and produces exactly the condensation it was bought to prevent. The better covers are waterproof on the outside and vented at the bottom, or use a fabric that passes vapour.
