A focal reducer shortens the effective focal length of a telescope, which widens the field of view and lowers the focal ratio at the same time. For imaging, the lower ratio is the point: the same object spreads over fewer pixels and builds signal faster, so an exposure that was marginal becomes practical. For visual use, the wider field is the point, and on a long folded telescope it is the difference between a keyhole and a view. Everything about fitting one comes down to a single unforgiving number, the back focus distance the reducer requires between its own rear surface and the sensor. Too short and the stars stretch outward at the corners, too long and they stretch inward; the reduction factor also drifts with the spacing, so the figure printed on the box is only achieved at the specified distance. Adapters, filter wheels and camera flanges all consume that budget, and it has to be added up before ordering rather than discovered afterwards. Read the image circle the reducer covers against the diagonal of the sensor, since a reducer that suits a small planetary chip will vignette a full-frame one badly. Many reducers also act as field correctors, flattening the curved focal plane of a fast telescope — a separate job, often combined, and worth knowing which you are buying.
