What “Essentials” means

The maker says it outright: this version replaces the optical polar scope of the standard LX3 with a simple sighting tube. That single substitution is what makes it the cheaper model, and it is stated rather than buried.

What that costs in use

Polar alignment accuracy sets how long an exposure can run before stars trail. A magnified reticle places the axis within arcminutes; a tube sighted along by eye places it within degrees. For a wide-angle lens on a short exposure the difference may not show; for a telephoto it will.

The mechanical drive

No batteries, no power bank, nothing to fail in the cold. That is the whole argument for the MiniTrack family, and it survives intact in this version.

The number to weigh carefully

Sixty per cent more precise than its predecessor. Without the predecessor’s own number that cannot be converted into anything useful, and no absolute precision figure is published for either.

Availability

German, French, Italian and Spanish Amazon stores ran from 150 € to 156 € on the day of the survey.

American Amazon store lists it in local currency, which the euro range above sets aside.

British Amazon store gave no result whatever, so the buy button there opens a search rather than an empty page.
