Not a torch, and honest about it

A bedside night light, tapped to switch between off, twenty per cent and full. There is no beam, no clip and no strap. It belongs on a table beside a chair, not in a pocket.

The figure it publishes that the torches do not

Six hundred and twenty-five nanometres. Neither purpose-built astronomy torch on this shelf publishes its red LED’s wavelength, and this bedside lamp does. The dark-adapted eye is least sensitive at the deep red end, which is the entire reason red light is used.

The twenty per cent step

That is the setting that matters. A red light beside a star chart has to be dim enough that glancing at it does not undo twenty minutes of adaptation, and a fixed bright red fails at exactly that.

Where it belongs on this site

Next to a planisphere and an observing chair. As part of a set-up on a table it earns its place; as the thing you carry to find a dropped eyepiece it does not.
