  • Publishes both the wavelength band and the dimming range, which almost nothing here does
  • Five per cent as a stated minimum is a real figure rather than a vague “dimmable”
  • No absolute output figure, so 5 % cannot be converted to lumens

Best for: An observer who wants a red torch whose low setting is specified rather than promised

Two published figures, and they are the right two

Six hundred and twenty to six hundred and thirty nanometres, and stepless dimming from five to a hundred per cent. Wavelength decides how much dark adaptation the light costs; the dimming range decides whether it can be turned down far enough to matter.

The half that is missing

An absolute output. Five per cent of what? Without a lumen figure the minimum cannot be compared with another torch, and a low percentage of a very bright lamp is not a low light.

The zoom

The head slides to spread or narrow the beam, and the maker claims 200 metres at the narrow end. For reading a chart, the wide setting is the useful one; the throw is a feature for a different market.

Where it is sold

Hunting, night observation, fishing, and astronomy — the maker lists all four. That explains the reach at the top end, and it explains why the dimming range is the specification an astronomer should read first.

Availability

German, French, Italian and Spanish Amazon stores ran from 40 € to 47 € on the day of the survey.

British Amazon store lists it in local currency, which the euro range above sets aside.

American Amazon store gave no result whatever, so the buy button there opens a search rather than an empty page.
