This is the step most people skip and most experienced observers wish they had not.
Start with the patterns that are always up
From mid-northern latitudes a handful of constellations circle the pole and never set. Learning those first gives a fixed reference that is available on every clear night of the year.
Use the bright patterns as signposts
Most of the sky is learned by pointing from something bright to something fainter. The habit of stepping from a known star to an unknown one is exactly the skill a finder requires later.
Get a planisphere and set it properly
Line up the date and the hour, and check the latitude band printed on the disc — a planisphere for the wrong band puts the horizon in the wrong place. Turn it through an evening once to see how the sky moves.
Watch one planet across a month
Find whichever planet is visible and look for it once a week from the same spot. Seeing it move against the stars is the observation that makes the whole arrangement concrete.
Then bring the binoculars out
Once you can find a pattern by eye, binoculars show what is inside it, and the step to a telescope stops being a search.

It helps, and a planisphere does the job without a screen and without ruining dark adaptation. The disc also shows how the sky moves through a night and a year, which a screen that simply redraws itself does not.
How long does this take?
A few evenings to know the main patterns of a season, and a year to know them all, because the sky you see at ten in the evening in January is not the sky you see in July.
