A base that moves right: tension, not friction

A Dobsonian that is pleasant to use and one that is a fight differ by a few turns of adjustment, and most owners never discover where those adjustments are.

The rocker box looks like the part with nothing to adjust, and it is the part that decides how the telescope feels.

Set it on firm, level ground

A base on soft ground sinks unevenly and the azimuth motion goes stiff on one side. On grass, a board under it is the whole fix.

Balance before touching any tension

Put the eyepiece you will actually use in the focuser, with the finder attached, and see whether the tube stays where you put it near the zenith and near the horizon. Balance first; tension is for what balance cannot fix.

Adjust altitude tension to the load

Enough that the tube stays put with a heavy eyepiece, no more. Too much and fine pointing becomes a shove; too little and the tube creeps down while you are looking.

Check the azimuth surfaces

Grit between the bearing surfaces is the commonest cause of a base that moves in jerks. Clean them, and leave them dry unless the maker specifies otherwise — lubricant here usually makes the motion worse.

Learn to nudge rather than push

At high magnification, a tap on the tube moves the field a useful amount and a push overshoots. It is a technique rather than an adjustment, and it becomes automatic within an evening.

The questions that keep arriving

Why does my tube drift down when I let go?

The altitude bearings are too loose for the load, which usually means a heavy eyepiece was added. Many bases have an adjustable tension clutch; on those that do not, moving the tube slightly in its rings rebalances it.

Should the motion be as free as possible?

No. Too free and the tube overshoots every fine adjustment and drifts under a heavy eyepiece. A little resistance is what makes high magnification usable by hand.
