Damping time is the specification almost no maker publishes, and it decides more about an evening than most that are published.

Lower it

The thinnest leg section flexes most, so a tripod at half extension is a stiffer instrument than the same tripod fully out. Standing on a chair is a better answer than extending the last section.

Weigh the centre down

Hanging the accessory tray, a bag or a weight from the centre lowers the centre of gravity and shortens the settling time more cheaply than any other change.

Fix the feet

Legs splaying on a smooth surface, or sinking unevenly into soft ground, undo everything else. A spreader that tensions the legs is the cheapest large improvement available.

Change how you focus

A focuser touched gently, or driven by a motor, excites far less vibration than one grabbed. For a telescope used at high magnification this alone can make the difference.

The questions that keep arriving

Is the mount or the tripod at fault?

Usually the tripod, and specifically the thinnest extended leg section. A good head on a thin tripod is a thin tripod, and testing at half extension will tell you immediately.

Does a heavier tripod always damp faster?

Generally yes for a given design, and material matters too: steel damps faster than thin aluminium, and carbon faster still at a price. Leg diameter matters more than total mass.
