A full Moon in a telescope of any size is uncomfortably bright, and the discomfort costs you the dark adaptation that took twenty minutes to build. A filter makes the low-contrast detail readable rather than washed out.
The case for one is practical rather than optical, and it is stronger than it first sounds.
Twenty minutes of adaptation, lost to one bright limb
Dark adaptation takes about twenty minutes to build and is destroyed by a moment of bright light. A full Moon through a telescope is bright enough to do exactly that, and the rest of the session suffers.
What to compare
The transmission percentage. A filter that passes a quarter of the light and one that passes half are different tools for different phases and different apertures. Cheap filters achieve the dimming with a green tint; a neutral density filter dims evenly and keeps the grey.
The variable option
Two polarising elements in a rotating cell, covering a wide range of transmission. It suits the Moon, where the right amount of dimming changes week by week, and it works on bright planets too.
What to check mechanically
The thread against the eyepieces you own, and the cell depth against a short eyepiece barrel, where a deep cell can reach the field lens.

Fixed or variable?
A variable polarising filter covers a range of transmission from one accessory, which suits an observer following the Moon through its phases. A single fixed filter suits someone who only looks near full Moon.
Will a filter show more detail?
It makes existing detail readable rather than adding any. Near the terminator, where the shadows are long, the contrast is already high and a filter mostly helps by stopping the bright limb from dazzling you.
