Can I photograph through a telescope with a phone?

Everyone discovers this within a week of buying a telescope, and everyone discovers the same obstacle.

Why it works at all

The eyepiece forms an image that a phone camera can focus on, exactly as an eye does. For a bright object like the Moon, a phone sensor has plenty of light to work with.

Why holding it never works

The phone lens has to be centred on the beam leaving the eyepiece and held at the right distance, and both tolerances are small. Doing that by hand while pressing a button is close to impossible, and each attempt loses the object.

What an adapter has to provide

Adjustment in three axes, so that the camera can be moved across, along and away from the eyepiece independently. A clamp with no fine adjustment turns the problem into a wrestling match in the dark.

Two dimensions to check

The eyepiece diameter range the collar accepts, measured on the eyepiece you actually use, and the phone width range with the case on. Phones with corner-mounted cameras also need more travel than some adapters offer.

Why does my photo have a black ring around it?

Because the phone lens is not centred on the exit pupil of the eyepiece, or is at the wrong distance from it. Both are adjustments, and an adapter that only clamps without allowing them cannot fix it.

Which eyepiece works best?

A longer one with generous eye relief. A short eyepiece places the exit pupil close to the glass, which is exactly where a phone camera cannot reach because the phone body gets in the way.
