A mount that stops shaking quickly, a red dot finder, and a standard eyepiece fitting. The magnification printed on the box is the least useful number on the packaging, and chasing it is how these telescopes end up unused.
This is the corner of the market where the gap between what is advertised and what determines the outcome is widest, and the reason is that the person buying is rarely the person who will use it.
The mount decides everything
A telescope that shakes for four seconds after being touched cannot be aimed at the Moon by a seven-year-old. Every attempt ends the same way, and the telescope goes in a cupboard. A steady mount with a modest tube beats an unsteady one with a larger tube by a margin nothing else recovers.
Aiming is the hard part
Finding anything through a telescope is far harder than looking at it, and a red dot finder — a mark projected on a clear window, seen with both eyes open — removes almost all of that difficulty. An optical finder that inverts the view adds to it.
The fitting decides the future
A standard 1.25 inch eyepiece barrel means the telescope can grow with better eyepieces. A narrow 0.965 inch barrel or a proprietary fitting means it cannot, and a child who gets interested hits a wall.

Every magnification claim on the packaging, and the photographs on the box, which are not what any telescope of that size shows.

Why is the magnification on the box misleading?
Because magnification is the telescope focal length divided by the eyepiece focal length, so any figure can be reached by supplying a poor enough eyepiece. A large number on a small telescope usually means exactly that.
What should a child be able to see?
The craters of the Moon, the four bright moons of Jupiter, and the rings of Saturn. Those three sights are what a modest telescope on a steady mount delivers, and they are what turn one evening into an interest.
