What is seeing, and can I do anything about it?

Seeing is the single most underestimated factor in what an evening shows, and it is entirely outside anyone’s control.

What it is

Layers of air at different temperatures, moving. Light passing through them is bent slightly and continuously, so a star boils and a planet shimmers. It is a property of the sky, not of the telescope.

What it limits

Fine detail. On a night of poor seeing there is a magnification beyond which the image gets larger and no sharper, and that ceiling is often well below what the aperture could deliver.

What you can influence

Not the atmosphere, but the air near you. Observing over a roof, a driveway or a wall that has been in the sun all day adds local turbulence to whatever the sky is doing. Grass is better than tarmac, and away from the house is better than beside it.

What to do on a bad night

Drop the magnification and look at objects that do not depend on fine detail — large clusters, wide doubles, the Moon at low power. Chasing detail through turbulence is how an evening gets wasted.

The questions that keep arriving

Is a clear night a steady night?

Often the opposite. The transparent nights that follow a cold front are frequently turbulent, while a slightly hazy, still night can offer excellent seeing. The two qualities are independent and both matter.

Does seeing affect deep-sky objects?

Much less. A faint galaxy is a soft extended object to begin with, so a little blurring costs little. Seeing matters most where fine detail matters: planets, the Moon at high power, and close double stars.
