Batteries lose capacity, grease stiffens so focusers and mounts feel heavy, and anything brought indoors afterwards condenses. The last is the one that causes damage, and it is prevented by letting things warm up inside a closed case.
Winter is the best observing season in most of Europe and the hardest on equipment, and the two are related.
Batteries
Capacity falls with temperature. Coin cells in finders, the cells in a GoTo handset and the pack running a dew heater all give less than their rating on a cold night, and the finder is the one that strands people.
Grease
Focusers stiffen, mount bearings feel heavy, and a clutch set by feel in summer can be too tight in winter. None of it is damage; all of it changes how the equipment handles.
Condensation on the way in
The one that actually causes harm. Cold optics in a warm room condense immediately. Put the telescope in its case or a closed bag before bringing it in, and let it warm up sealed.
What helps most
A dew shield fitted from the start of the session, a chair so you are not standing still in the cold, and gloves thin enough to work the focuser.
The questions that keep arriving
Why does bringing a telescope inside cause dew?
Because cold glass in warm humid air condenses immediately, exactly as a cold drink does. Leaving the tube in a closed case or bag while it warms means the condensation forms on the case rather than the optics.
Do coin cells really fail in the cold?
They lose capacity noticeably, which is why a red dot finder that worked in October can be dead in January on the same cell. A spare in the case is the cheapest insurance on this site.
