Daytime optics pointed at the sky
A spotting scope is designed around a zoom eyepiece, a sealed body and a close focus distance — three things a telescope does not need. Pointed at the sky it works, within limits set by its aperture and by the exit pupil its zoom leaves at high magnification.
Aperture and magnification mean the same thing on both shelves. Exit pupil is where the difference shows: at 60x on an 80 mm objective it is barely over a millimetre, which is fine in daylight and unforgiving at night.

Read the exit pupil at the top of the zoom range. It is the number that says what the instrument will do after dark.
