Celestron X-Cel LX 2x review

Celestron's X-Cel LX 2x: a three-element apochromatic, fully multi-coated 1.25-inch Barlow with a brass compression ring, a rubber grip and a filter thread.

The compression ring, and what it replaces

Most Barlows hold the eyepiece with one or two setscrews that press on a single point of its barrel. Celestron uses a brass compression ring just inside the top: turning the thumbscrew closes the ring evenly around the eyepiece. It holds firmly and leaves no marks, which matters with eyepieces costing more than the Barlow.

Three elements

The optics are a three-element apochromatic design, fully multi-coated. Celestron describes the images as virtually free of false color. A triplet holds color correction better than a simple doublet, most visibly on fast telescopes and on bright planets.

At what price

On November 7, 2026 it sold at $99.99. Celestron’s Omni 2x cost $34.99 and its X-Cel LX 3x, same build, $89.90.

The filter thread

The barrel accepts standard 1.25-inch filters. A filter there works with every eyepiece put into the Barlow.

What is not here

No camera thread and no length. Amazon’s item data gives 159 g (5.6 oz). Celestron states a 2-year US warranty.

What observers ask about this one

Is it worth three times the Omni 2x?

On a fast telescope, or with eyepieces you care about, often yes: the apochromatic triplet controls false color better and the compression ring will not mark barrels. On a slow f/10 telescope used visually, the difference is small and the [Omni 2x](/reviews/barlow-lenses-celestron/) does the job.

Does it match the X-Cel LX eyepieces?

Yes, it shares their black-and-orange housing, and its 2x factor pairs well with them: a 25 mm X-Cel LX becomes an effective 12.5 mm.

Can I use 1.25 in filters with it?

Yes. The barrel is threaded for standard 1.25 in filters, so one filter on the Barlow works with every eyepiece in it.
