Celestron Omni 2x review

Celestron's Omni 2x: a 1.25-inch Barlow with fully multi-coated optics and blackened lens edges, which doubles each eyepiece's power while keeping its eye relief.

The eye relief sentence

Celestron’s listing says something most Barlow listings leave out: the Omni 2x doubles each eyepiece’s power while keeping its eye relief.

Eye relief is how close the eye must be to the lens to see the whole field. Short eyepieces usually have little of it. A 10 mm eyepiece in this Barlow gives the power of a 5 mm, with the 10 mm’s more comfortable eye distance. For eyeglass wearers that is the main reason to own a Barlow.

Four magnifications from two eyepieces

Celestron’s own example: with a 25 mm and a 10 mm eyepiece, the Barlow adds the equivalents of a 12.5 mm and a 5 mm. On a 650 mm reflector that is 26x, 52x, 65x and 130x.

Blackened edges

The optics are fully multi-coated and the lens edges are blackened. Blackening stops light that strikes the rim from scattering into the image, a small gain in contrast.

Against the X-Cel LX

On November 7, 2026 this cost $34.99; Celestron’s X-Cel LX 2x cost $99.99 for three apochromatic elements and a brass compression ring. On a slow telescope used visually, the Omni does most of that job.

What observers ask about this one

How many magnifications does a Barlow add?

As many as you have eyepieces. Celestron's example: with a 25 mm and a 10 mm, adding the Barlow gives four choices, the 25 mm, the 10 mm, the 25 mm doubled (like a 12.5 mm) and the 10 mm doubled (like a 5 mm).

What does keeping the eye relief mean?

Short eyepieces usually make you press your eye close to a small lens. A 10 mm in a 2x Barlow gives the power of a 5 mm while keeping the 10 mm's eye distance, which is far more comfortable, especially with glasses.

Are the blackened edges important?

They stop light that hits the rim of the lens from bouncing into the image. The result is slightly better contrast, which shows on planets.
