One to forty percent

The filter has two polarizing elements. Turning the lower ring rotates one against the other and sets the transmission anywhere from 1 to 40 percent. Celestron says it cuts the Moon’s glare and improves contrast, and also helps on Venus and bright double stars.

Why variable

A fixed Moon filter is right for one phase and one magnification. A full Moon at low power needs heavy dimming; a crescent at high power needs little. A variable filter covers both.

Fitting

It threads onto any Celestron 1.25-inch eyepiece, and most others with the standard thread.

How does a variable filter work?

Two polarizing layers: turning one against the other changes how much light passes, here from 1% to 40%.

Why variable rather than fixed?

The Moon's brightness changes with its phase and with magnification. A crescent at high power needs little dimming; a full Moon at low power needs a lot.

Does it fit non-Celestron eyepieces?

Celestron says any Celestron 1.25 in eyepiece. Most other 1.25 in eyepieces use the same thread.
