A range, not a number

One per cent to forty per cent, published. That is the specification this whole family usually lacks: most Moon filters are sold under a word, or at best a single percentage that suits one lunar phase and no other.

How the adjustment works

Two polarising elements, rotating against one another. When their axes align, transmission is highest; crossed, it falls to the minimum. The lower ring sets the angle, and the maker describes the operation in one sentence.

Where the range is useful

A crescent Moon at low power needs almost no attenuation. A full Moon in a 200 mm telescope is genuinely uncomfortable. One filter that spans both, adjusted at the eyepiece, is worth more than three fixed ones in a case.

The cost

Two polarising elements are still two more pieces of glass in the path, and even wide open a polarising pair transmits less than clear glass. On faint objects that matters; on the Moon, which is the point of this filter, it does not.
