It is a camera with optics in front and a computer behind, and there is no eyepiece. It produces recognisable images of faint objects from a light-polluted garden within minutes, which no visual telescope of the same price can do — and it is a different activity.
The disagreement about these instruments usually comes from comparing them with a telescope on a criterion neither side agreed to.
What is actually being bought
Speed, and access. A smart telescope is out of its bag and producing a recognisable nebula within minutes, from a garden where an eyepiece would have shown a faint smudge or nothing at all. That is the whole proposition, and it is a strong one.
What is given up
The eyepiece, and everything that comes with it — the sense of looking at a real object in real time, the fine detail on planets, the ability to change magnification, and the long life of an instrument that has no software in it.
The specification that catches people out
Field of view. Sensor size and focal length together decide what fits, and a smart telescope framed for large nebulae makes a small galaxy a handful of pixels. Check the field against a list of objects you actually want before looking at anything else.
How to decide
If the pleasure you are after is seeing, buy an eyepiece telescope. If it is having an image of something faint that you produced yourself, from where you live, tonight, the smart telescope does that and the conventional one largely does not.
The questions that keep arriving
Can I look through one?
No. There is nowhere to put an eye. The image appears on a phone or a tablet and builds up over seconds and minutes as short exposures are added together.
Does it work under city light?
Far better than an eyepiece does, because stacking and processing can subtract a gradient the eye cannot. That is the single strongest argument for one, and it is the situation most owners are actually in.
