What astronomy kit fits in hand luggage?

Travel astronomy is decided by a constraint rather than by optics, and the constraint is rarely the tube.

Packed length before focal length

A tube that exceeds the diagonal of a cabin case will be left behind, whatever its aperture. Folded designs and short refractors exist for exactly this.

The tripod is the problem

It is the longest item, often the heaviest, and nearly always the piece the maker economised on. A travel kit assembled around a good small tripod works; one assembled around a good tube and whatever tripod came with it does not.

What to leave out

Counterweights, if a tracker with a light load can be balanced without them. A full eyepiece case, in favour of two eyepieces and a Barlow. Anything requiring mains power.

The case is not optional

On this shelf it is the part that decides whether the optics survive the journey, and a hard case sized for the cabin is a better purchase than a slightly larger tube.

The questions that keep arriving

Should I pack optics in the hold?

Optics are better carried than checked, and a case that fits the cabin is worth choosing for that reason alone. Tripods and counterweights are the obvious candidates for the hold.

Is a travel telescope a compromise?

Always, and the comparison that matters is not against a larger telescope but against no telescope. A small instrument that is with you under a dark sky shows more than a large one at home.
