Can I use a spotting scope for astronomy?

A spotting scope is the piece of optics most likely to be already in the house when an interest in the sky begins, and it is more capable than people expect.

Where it works well

The Moon, at almost any magnification its zoom offers. Bright planets, to the extent of showing Saturn as a shape rather than a point. Large bright clusters at the low end of the zoom.

Where it stops

Faint objects. The zoom that makes it convenient by day narrows the field and dims the image at its long end, and the exit pupil at maximum magnification is often too small for dark-sky work.

What it does better than a telescope

Pointing. The image is the right way up and the right way round, which makes finding anything dramatically easier, and it is up and working in the time a telescope takes to be carried outside.

What decides the result

The tripod, more than the scope. A good spotting scope on a light photographic tripod delivers a trembling image at the top of its zoom range, and no optical quality survives that.

On models where the eyepiece is removable, often yes, through an adapter. It is worth checking before buying if the intention is to use the scope both ways.

Angled or straight?

Angled, for the sky. It is easier on the neck when pointed high, easier to share, and asks for a lower tripod. Straight is faster for something already located on the ground.
