Looking slightly to one side of a faint object instead of straight at it. The centre of the retina has almost no low-light receptors, so a faint patch that vanishes when stared at appears when the gaze moves off it.
It is the single most useful technique a beginner can learn, and it costs nothing.
Why it works
Two kinds of receptor, distributed differently. The centre of the retina is dense with the ones built for daylight and colour, and nearly empty of the ones that work in the dark. Those are concentrated a little off-axis.
How to do it
Find the object, then move your gaze a few degrees to one side while keeping your attention on it. The object brightens, and structure appears. Looking back at it directly makes it fade again, which is disconcerting the first time.
What it will not do
Show colour. The receptors that work at low light do not report it, which is why faint nebulae stay grey however well you use the technique.
The habit that goes with it
Give each object minutes rather than seconds, and let the eye keep adapting. The faintest detail of an evening usually appears after a while of patient looking, not in the first glance.

Which side should I look to?
Towards the nose generally works better than away from it, because the blind spot sits on the outer side. A few degrees is enough, and it is worth experimenting with both.
Why does the object disappear when I look at it?
Because the centre of the retina is built for daylight detail and colour and has very few of the receptors that work at low light. Pointing it at something faint is pointing the wrong instrument at it.
