It clamps around an eyepiece rather than going into the focuser. That single fact explains both its versatility — telescopes, binoculars, microscopes, spotting scopes — and its ceiling, because everything it records has already passed through an eyepiece designed for an eye rather than a sensor.

The practical specification

Four megapixels, Full HD video, a 1.47 in screen, an app for Android and iOS, and a microSD slot with a 32 GB card already in it. The screen is the part that matters most: it makes framing possible without a phone, in the cold, with gloves on.

Loop recording

One to five minutes, per the maker. That is an unusual feature here and a useful one for a meteor watch or for catching a transit, where the interesting second is not known in advance.

How does clamping differ from replacing the eyepiece?

A clamp-on camera photographs the image the eyepiece has already formed, which is called afocal. It works on any instrument, and it adds the eyepiece’s own aberrations and vignetting to the result. A camera in the focuser sees the telescope’s image directly.

Why does the eyepiece diameter range matter?

Because the clamp has to grip the eyepiece body. Thirty to sixty-five millimetres covers most astronomical eyepieces and many binocular oculars, which is why this camera is sold as universal.
