Why does everyone insist on red light?

The asymmetry between how long adaptation takes to build and how quickly it is lost is the entire reason for the convention.

What dark adaptation is

A slow change in the eye that takes roughly twenty minutes to become useful and continues improving for longer. It is what makes a faint object visible at all, and it is why the last object of an evening is often easier than the first.

Why red is special

The eye’s sensitivity at deep red is much lower than across the rest of the spectrum, so a red light of a given brightness disturbs adaptation far less than a white one. It is a matter of degree rather than an exemption: a very bright red light still costs you.

What ruins it

One glance at a phone screen, a car’s interior light, a neighbour’s security lamp. Recovery is not instant, and on a shared observing site it affects everyone rather than only the person holding the torch.

What to look for in practice

A true red emitter, a dimmer that reaches genuinely faint, and a torch that starts on red rather than cycling through white to get there.

The questions that keep arriving

Is any red light good enough?

No. A true red LED emits in a narrow band; a white LED behind a red filter leaks other wavelengths, and enough gets through on some cheap torches to spoil the point.

What matters most in a red torch?

How dim it goes. Most torches sold for astronomy are far too bright at their lowest setting for a genuinely dark site, and a smooth dimmer reaching a faint glow is worth more than any amount of maximum output.
