Two receptors, two clocks

The cones — the daylight, colour receptors — settle in about ten minutes, and that is the point at which most people think they have adapted. The rods are the slow ones, and they are the ones that matter: the pigment they depend on, rhodopsin, is roughly half rebuilt after five minutes and approaches full regeneration at around half an hour. Serious naked-eye observers give it longer still, because sensitivity keeps creeping up for hours.

What that means for an evening

The useful part arrives at around twenty minutes and the faintest objects keep getting easier well past it. Plan the session so the hardest target is last — the same object is genuinely more visible at midnight than at ten, with nothing having changed but your eyes.

Losing it

A second or two of white light bleaches the rhodopsin and undoes most of the work. A car’s interior lamp, a neighbour’s security light, a phone — all of them cost the same rebuild again.

Why red, specifically

The rods are largely insensitive to long-wavelength red. A deep red light therefore lets the cones read a chart while leaving the rods’ pigment alone, which is the whole mechanism behind the convention. The key word is dim: most torches sold for astronomy are far too bright at their lowest setting, and enough red light still costs you.

Practical consequences

Plan the session so the faintest object comes last. Set up in daylight if you can. And keep the torch that starts on red, not the one that cycles through white to get there.

The questions that keep arriving

Does a phone screen at minimum brightness matter?

Yes. Even dimmed, a white screen is far brighter than anything else in view and resets much of the adaptation. A red filter over it, or a printed chart, avoids the problem.

Does one eye adapt separately?

Largely, which is why some observers keep one eye covered while using a torch. It looks eccentric and it works.
